The Fort Lauderdale Plumber’s Guide On Basement Floor Drain

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

Fort Lauderdale plumber’s guide on basement floor drainWe know that we all have one in the house, but how many homeowners really know what it does?  Well, for starters it is the lowest drain in the house, and like all drains it works using the power of gravity.  But there is more to the basement floor drain that just harnessing the power of gravity to prevent flooding in your home.  There are various aspects to a basement floor drain and you might not know what purpose these parts serve.  So, let’s look at the anatomy of a basement floor drain and how it helps you!

  • P-Trap

When you house was built, the basement floor drain was installed long before the floor was poured.  That installation included a P-Trap and a slightly horizontal outlet pipe that ties into the main sewage outlet.  A P-Trap is the bump in a pipe that you can see under sinks and it has an important job.  It was designed to hold a reservoir of water near the opening of the drain to prevent foul odors from seeping into the basement from the sewer.

  • Floor Trap

A basement drain is only effective if the concreate on the basement floor is slightly sloped to guide any water toward it.  A floor trap is fitted to make cleaning any blockages from the drain easier.  While bits and pieces of debris can still make it through the small holes of the trap, it does make it easier to prevent blockages from larger chunks of debris being washed down the drain.

  • Interconnection

The last aspect of any drainage system is what it is connected to, and that is where the interconnection part comes in.  The basement floor drain is usually connected to the draining system of you home, so when it gets blocked up, you have to find the problem fast.  To do this you need to have someone flush the toilet upstairs, while you stay in the basement to see if the water rises in the aperture.  If nothing happens, then the basement floor drain isn’t the issue.  But if it is, you’re going to need to call on a professional to come and help.

We hope that you learned a lot from the Fort Lauderdale plumber’s guide on basement floor drain. Also read this article on how to keep your drains from clogging to prevent inconvenience in your home. The Importance Of Florida Water Heater Maintenance

Tuesday, March 24th, 2015

Florida water heater maintenanceWe rely on our Water Heating system on a daily basis.  Whether you have a gas operated unit or electric system, you won’t generally need to give it a lot of attention.  Investing in a good water heater can last for over a decade, but even the best systems require a bit of annual maintenance.  If you feel up to the challenge of trying your hand at this yourself, we have compiled a simple, 3-step process that you can follow.

  • Check the Temperature Setting

The first step would be to locate your water heating system in your home.  Then, have a look for the temperature setting dial.  It is usually on the gas valve or behind the electric water heater panel.

Turn the termperature setting down to between 115 and 120 degrees F.

Lowering the temperature helps protect the tank from overheating and save on energy needed to heat the water.

  • Check the T&P Valve

The T&P or temperature and pressure relief valve is vital to the proper operation and overall safety of your unit.  It is relatively simple to check this important feature on your unit.

Start by lifting the T&P valve lever half way and then let it go.  Allowing the lever to rapidly snap back down.

You should hear gurgling noises as the valve allows water to be released into the drain tube.

If the T&P valve doesn’t do anything, then get hold of a professional in Florida to replace it for you.

  • Remove Sediment

The final step in routine water heater maintenance is to clean out sediment from the bottom of the tank.  Sediment build up in a hot water heater tank often leads to the build-up of rust which has a negative effect on the efficiency of your unit.

Place a bucket under the draining pipe and turn the taps for a quick flush out.  A full tank drainage is always best, but that requires a lot of work and should be handled by a qualified water heating maintenance professional in Florida.

When in doubt about how to adequately perform routine maintenance on your water heater, rather call in a professional in your area rather than tinkering yourself.  A quick visit from your plumber is better than a total overhaul of your water heating system.

We hope that you learned the importance of Florida water heater maintenance through our blog today. Tips On Surviving Bathroom Remodeling In Biscayne Park

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

bathroom remodeling biscayne parkDeciding to give your bathroom a make-over or refresh isn’t something that homeowners enter into lightly.  Mainly because of the stresses and mess involved with any remodelling job.  But having an idea what to expect before the first hammer is raised is a definite plus!  Finding a bathroom remodelling contractor in Biscayne Park FL is the first step of your journey toward a fresh, new bathroom, making sure you know what to expect is the next.  Although you could attempt a DIY bathroom remodel, there are reasons why professionals do that for a living.  Having an unfinished bathroom because your plumbing skills aren’t as good as you thought they were is just going to give you more headaches than it’s worth.  There are other tricky aspects of a bathroom remodel that you could save yourself a heap of worry over by hiring a qualified contractor.

But what can you expect from your newly found professional in Biscayne Park?  It’s always best to start at the beginning, so let’s look at the bathroom remodelling process that you can will now start going through:

  • Design Stage

The first part of any remodelling job is to have a vision in mind of what you want the final product to look like.  Whether you are doing a total overhaul of your bathroom, or simply replacing a toilet, there needs to be some form of design or planning in place.  You could either work with your contractor to come up with your dream bathroom, or rely on one of their tried-and-trusted templates for your bathroom.  Whichever route you choose, you do need to go into the project knowing what to expect in the end.

  • Demolition is a Stage too!

This depends on what level of remodel you are wanting to do.  Is it a total tear-out or simply changing a few fixtures?  Either way, there will be some demolition involved.  Your contractor is likely to arrange a roll-off dumpster or hauling company to sort out whatever mess is left behind during the remodel.

  • Rouging-In Stage

This is the stage where any plumbing or electrical work gets “roughed-in” to the remodelling process.  In these cases, inspections will be done by city or county officials to ensure that any pluming or electrical renovations meet their requirements.

  • Plumbing Installation Stage

At this point, you’re nearing the end of your bathroom remodelling process, and if you were replacing bathtubs, toilets or showers, they will be installed now.  This is done in accordance with the “rough-in” and after city or county official approval.

  • Finishing Touches

Once all the large installations have been done, the final stage of the process begins.  This is where contractors now start laying tiles, closing up any holes in the walls and arrange a final inspection.  Thereafter, bathroom cabinets will be installed along with new fixtures and finally, your bathroom will get a fresh lick of paint.

Toilet Repair DIY Tips For The Homeowner

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

toilet repair diy in Miami FLAs a homeowner, I bet at some point, we all have once (or more) experienced having a malfunctioning or damaged toilet in our home. More than annoying, a faulty toilet can waste a lot of your time and hard earned money. It can also pose dangers and different health problems if not addressed immediately.

Even if you are not a plumbing expert, you can fix some common toilet problems on your own. Here are some of the most common toilet problems you can encounter with tips on how to fix them.

1.       Clogs

You can easily clear minor toilet clogs using a force-cup plunger. This type of plunger, also known as a flange plunger provides a better vacuum seal for toilets compared to classic cup plungers. Tightly grab the plunger and push in and out repeatedly. One good trick to increase suction is to apply petroleum jelly around the ring of the plunger.

2.       Leaks

Identify whether the leak is caused by a misaligned flapper valve. To check, drop some food coloring into the toilet’s storage tank. If the color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, adjust flapper valve. If adjusting did not help, replace flapper valve.

3.       Running toilet

Turn off water supply valve located behind the toilet. Check to see if the chain connecting the flush lever and the rubber flapper is too short, or too long.  Adjust the chain if it has extra length, otherwise, you may need to replace the chain with a longer chain.

4.       Noisy toilet

A noisy toilet can be caused either by a maladjusted toilet tank float or a worn out or damaged toilet fill valve. Both issues can be easy to fix. If you have a maladjusted tank float, all you have to do is adjust the float using a screwdriver. If the issue is not fixed after adjusting the float, try replacing the entire toilet fill valve with a new one.

This post will help you do a toilet repair diy in Miami FL. Call  Douglas Orr Plumbing at 305-887-1687, 954-522-8282 or 1-800-DOUG-ORR to schedule a service! You may also want to check out this article on how to install a new toilet.

The Importance Of Backflow Testing Services In West Palm Beach FL

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015

backflow testing services in West Palm Beach FLIn the event of water supply interruption or an abrupt change in water system pressure, water flow reversal may occur in the water line. Liquid, gas or solid particles may accidentally flow in the opposite direction- into the potable water lines. This plumbing issue is known as water backflow.

Backflow is not just an inconvenience; more importantly, it poses health risks to both homeowners and residents. When soiled water goes into the water supplies, it contaminates drinking water and may cause serious health problems.

You can easily prevent backflows in your home by making use of a backflow preventer. Whether your house is missing a backflow preventer and you need a backflow prevention device to be installed, or if you already have a backflow prevention device and you need it to be tested and certified, you may want to hire an expert offering backflow testing services.

Here are the top reasons why backflow testing services are important to maintain a safe home:

1. Keep drinking water clean and safe.

Cross contamination due to backpressure and back-siphonage can be easily avoided with the use of backflow preventers. To maximize its benefits, seek the help of professional backflow tester. Hiring a professional backflow tester will help you prevent the risk of soiled water flowing right into your drinking water. Correspondingly, a backflow testing company will make sure you have a backflow preventer properly installed and ensure that the device is working properly.

2. Prevent water supply shut down.

Backflow prevention devices and annual backflow testing help ensure that your water is protected and are required by law in many countries. If you fail to comply with the required annual backflow testing, it will result in disconnection of water supply.

Having a backflow preventer installed and annually tested by a professional will save you all the trouble, inconvenience and dangers.

Annual backflow testing is as important as backflow prevention. For backflow testing services in West Palm Beach FL, visit OrrPlumbing.com or call Douglas Orr Plumbing at 305-887-1687, 954-522-8282 or 1-800-DOUG-ORR to schedule a service!

Another plumbing issue that you may also experience is sewage backup. Backups can damage your plumbing, which is why it is important to know how to avoid backups in your plumbing system and prevent further plumbing problems.

Should I Buy A Tankless Water Heater In Fort Lauderdale FL?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

should I buy a tankless water heater in Fort Lauderdale FLThere has been a lot of debate around whether tankless water heaters are better than the traditional tank-type heater that most of us have in our homes already.  The main attraction to a tank-type heater is that it costs less than a tankless water heater, but that shouldn’t be the deciding factor at all.  When considering that a water heater – whether it has a tank or not – helps keep you and your family comfortable, doesn’t it make sense that you have the best system available to you?  I think so, and that is why I have come up with a lot more pros than cons on why you should invest in a tankless hot water heater.  Let’s have a look at a few benefits of making the switch:

  • Compact Units Save Space

The first obvious feature of a Tankless Hot Water Heater is that it saves you a lot of space at home.  That’s because it obviously doesn’t come with a bulky tank that takes up a lot of space in your basement.  The unit is around the size of a medium-sized box, with a few wires and tubes that connect it to your water supply.  We mount it onto your wall which makes it ideal for either indoor or outdoor set up.  Better yet, if you only need a small unit, you can tuck it away inside a cabinet to maximize the space saving genius of a Tankless Unit.

  • Energy Efficient means Cost Effective

Aside from the initial cost of installing a Tankless Unit, the running costs of this water heater is much lower than traditional units.  That is because it is so energy efficient.  A Tankless Hot Water Heater doesn’t have to re-heat the water stored inside the tank each time to turn on the hot water, so it doesn’t use up as much energy.  These units warm water on demand, which also means that you will never have a cold shower when the hot water runs out!  That’s a big bonus in our books!

  • Longevity

Compared to traditional hot water heaters, the tankless heater has a much longer lifespan.  Conventional tank-type heating units have a lifespan of around 10 to 11 years, which might seem great until it breaks!  A Tankless heater has a lifespan that is double that!  The average lifespan of these units range between 20 to 22 years, which means that you get to enjoy hot showers for years to come.

  • No Flooding!

Not many people realize the importance of having a hot water heater unit that doesn’t flood, until their home is flooded.  That is arguably one of the best benefits of going tankless.  You don’t have a bulky tank that requires constant maintenance or extensive cleaning.  You also won’t have to contend with any holes that may form in the tank, which if left unattended, could lead to a flooded basement.

If you have been asking “should I buy a tankless water heater in Fort Lauderdale FL”, this article gives you an idea whether tankless water heaters are better than a traditional tank-type heater. You may also want to read this article to learn how to prevent rust in your water heater tank.

How To Find A Plumbing Leak In Your Miami Beach Home

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Old Leaky PipesDid you notice a sudden surge in your water bill? Unless it’s heavier usage, chances are, you might be the victim of a leak. Leaks can be very costly in the long run and require immediate attention especially since we don’t want to waste water. However, how can you fix a problem if you don’t know where to begin?

Here are some tips and guidelines to help you locate that leak!

First, check the obvious sources of water. Go through different areas of the house and double check your faucets, your showerheads, and your pipes. Usually, these things have easy fixes or usually need replacement parts.

If the problem isn’t the fixtures, check your water heaters and toilets. It’s important to listen so ditch the music when you’re inspecting. Warning signs are usually hissing sounds.

If by then, you’ve found the source of your problems, you can assess if there are DIY solutions or if it’s time to call in a professional. If this doesn’t seem to be the problem, it may be time to head out and check you meter lines.

Inspect the lines leading to your meter for any problems. If you don’t spot any, try turning off the valve for the house. If you’ve cut off water supply to the house but still find your meter running, it’s likely that the leak is within the house. Try if you can turn on and off the water supply in specific areas of the house. If you can narrow down the source of the leak  for the plumber, the better and sooner your problem gets fixed.

If the problem isn’t inside the house, It’s time to check fixtures and pipes outside. Hose bibs and faucets might be the problem so go around the house and check these. If you have a garden or a swimming pool, it would do you well to pay these areas a visit too. Remember it’s important to check for hissing sounds or other unusual noises. Try to see if you can also isolate the problem by checking and cutting off water supply to these areas.

How To Stop Shower From Dripping In Broward

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

how to stop shower from dripping in BrowardA dripping shower may not give you the worst day of your life but you’ll surely hate getting a high water bill. Who would ever want to pay for something that you have never even used or consumed? We bet none of you would want that. With this being said, it is only wise to have this leak problem fixed immediately. If you are into DIY plumbing and want to try to accomplish this project on your own, here’s a step-by-step guide you should follow.

1. First of all, you have to shut the water supply valve off. This will allow you to work on your shower without water shooting off. Remove the handle manually. If it’s stuck, you can use a hair dryer to loosen it up. You may also use a wrench but make sure that you’ll wrap a cloth around the handle to prevent damage. If it still won’t budge, use a handle puller that you can get from a plumbing supply shop.

2. Detach the stop tube that you’ll uncover once you have removed the handle. Pry the retaining clip of the cartridge using your reliable screwdriver. Detach the washer and then loosen the cartridge stem afterwards. Use a pair of pliers to pull it out.

3. If the cartridge is also stuck, you may use a puller as well. Remove the hex screw and nut for you to be able to access the threads. Make sure that you’ll align the tool ears with the notches. When it’s already aligned, twist it up and loosen it.

5. When you have loosened the cartridge notches, install a new cartridge for the shower. After the installation, start reassembling the parts that you have removed earlier.

6. Turn the water supply valve on and test if the leak has been fixed.

A 101 On Plumber Cost To Install A Toilet In Fort Lauderdale

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

plumber cost to install a toilet in Fort LauderdaleIt’s not that difficult to install a toilet but you should know that the project still requires plumbing skills. When installed incorrectly, it may wobble, break and even lead to accidents. To prevent such problems, make sure that you’ll hire a licensed plumber to accomplish the task. Now most homeowners are a little apprehensive because of the imminent expenses. What we have to say though is that there are plumbing companies like us that charge fairly and still deliver exceptional services. If you are concerned about how toilet installation costs vary, here are some factors that influence its rate.

1. According to Home Advisor, most homeowners spend an average of $544 for toilet installation. The actual range is actually $442 to $646 which is computed based on 302 profiles. This rate depends on whether you’ll supply your own toilet or the otherwise. This leads us to the second factor.

2. The type of toilet also affects the cost. The more high-end the toilet is, the more expensive it’s going to be. But of course, we recommend choosing high-efficiency, low-flow toilets so that you’ll be able to cut down your water consumption and lower your utility bill.

3. Installation duration affects the cost. According to research, the average amount of time that a plumber spends on this project is about one to two hours. This already includes the disconnection of the supply line; the repair of the water supply valve; draining of the tank; removal of the toilet and the installation of the new fixture. Of course, this amount of time depends whether a new toilet is going to be installed or an old one just needs to get replaced.

4. As usual, plumbing service rates vary across states or the area where you are located.

5. Existing plumbing also influences the price of toilet installation. If the existing plumbing needs to be repaired or moved, there will be additional costs. If the bathroom floor where the fixture should be installed is already damaged, the plumber may need to have it repaired or replaced, too. Whatever’s the case, it is important that the plumbing expert you’ll hire will inspect the place to give you the right quotation.

We hope that we have shown you some of the factors that influence the plumber cost to install a toilet in Fort Lauderdale. If you need a licensed plumbing professional now, just call Douglas Orr Plumbing at 305-887-1687 or 954-522-8282 to schedule a service!

Why You Need Miami Gardens Commercial Plumbing For Your Business

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

Miami Gardens commercial PlumbingUnless you’re exceptionally gifted at DIY plumbing, you’ll need professional plumbers to make sure that all the pipes, connections and fixtures in your house are in good condition. However, it is more than recommended to hire the services of plumbing professionals for your business. It is imperative. You can’t risk your place of income just because of disrupted operations due to nasty plumbing problems. Here are a few reasons why you’ll need a licensed plumber.

1. Your restaurant’s kitchen staff treats your garbage disposal as if it’s a garbage can.

The garbage disposal is a wonderful appliance that just makes our lives easier. However, remember that even if it’s meant to grind waste materials, it doesn’t necessarily have to serve as your garbage can or a trash compactor. Pasta, rice, stringy veggies, potato and banana peelings, bones, egg shells and coffee grounds should not be thrown into the sink. Otherwise, the sink drain pipe will always clog and your garbage disposal will sooner or later say goodbye to you.

2. The toilet is always clogged.

Whether you have a restaurant, an office or any kind of business establishment, it is important that your toilet is always in good condition. If it’s always blocked, your customers and employees won’t be able to use it and the place will, of course, smell.

3. You’ve never had your septic tank pumped out.

Your septic tank can only hold so much. If you won’t have it pumped out regularly, it will overflow and result to backflows and a possible contamination of your clean water lines. You surely do not want to compromise the health of your employees and your customers, do you?

4. Your bathroom sink is clogged and the faucet is not working.

Businesses that are open to the public or to paying customers need to have clean and working bathrooms. If the sink is always clogged and the faucet is not working at all, people will surely complain to the manager. Remember that, it is not only the products and services you offer that will keep customers loyal. The cleanliness and functionality of the bathroom is also important especially if your business is a dining establishment.

5. You haven’t had your main sewer line inspected and repaired.

Your sewer line is also prone to damage and clogging. No matter how hard you try to prevent grease and other sticky substances from getting into your drains, there will always be an instance when they will. Just to ensure that there’s no budding clog lurking inside the pipes that may sooner or later cause you a great deal of inconvenience, always have your sewer lines inspected and repaired.

We hope that you understand the importance of Miami Gardens commercial plumbing services for your business. If you need expert plumbers now, just visit www.OrrPlumbing.com or call us at 305-887-1687 or 954-522-8282 to schedule a service!

Can You Repair A Cracked Toilet Tank In Palm Beach FL

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

??????????????Your toilet is a durable plumbing fixture that can last for years and still be in good condition. However, we can’t deny the fact that it may also incur scratches and cracks. For instance, if you drop a hard object on it and the force is quite strong, it may actually crack. Other factors that may cause this plumbing problem include careless repair and aging. Wrong handling or tightening bowls too much may start to break it. And of course, as the years progress and the fixture ages, expect that it also gets weaker and more prone to cracks. Now you don’t have to worry at all about replacement if the damage isn’t too deep. You can certainly fix a cracked toilet on your own and here’s a DIY guide you can follow.

1. The first thing that you need to do is to shut the water supply off. You can do this by turning the supply valve that’s usually located at the side of the toilet. When you’re done, flush the tank to remove the water.

2. Now get a crescent wrench and detach the water supply from the toilet tank. Carefully remove the lid and set it aside, putting it on top of a soft cloth, rag or towel.

3. Get a sponge and absorb the remaining water inside the tank. Wipe everything with a chamois cloth afterwards. Make sure that everything’s completely dry to let the plumbing epoxy stick efficiently.

4.  When the tank is already dry, observe the cracks once again and guarantee that they do not extend to the inside of the tank.

5. Get the repair kit that you’ve purchased from the plumbing supply shop. Place the epoxy tube in a caulking gun and then cut the tip at approximately a quarter of an inch wide. Make sure that you’ll steadily hold the caulking gun. Pull the gun trigger to squeeze the epoxy out. Carefully apply the epoxy an inch before the crack; run it along and continue on for another inch at the other end.

6. Now get the putty knife and spread the epoxy out carefully over the crack. Smooth it out and let it dry. Drying should probably take 24 hours at the least.

7. Observe the patch that you’ve applied the following morning. If the crack didn’t expand, you’re done.

8. Reconnect the water supply line and then turn the valve on. Let the tank refill and test.

Leaking Kitchen Sink Stopper Problems in Your Dade County Home

Friday, July 18th, 2014

kitchen sink plugYour handy kitchen sink stopper prevents water from draining when you want to fill your sink with water for soaking or washing.  So, what if this sink stopper doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do?  Before you repair this, you have to remove it first.

The most common problem is a worn gasket around the plug’s head.  Now, how do you troubleshoot a leaky sink stopper?

  1. Insert the stopper over the sink basket and press.
  2. Fill the sink with warm water.
  3. Wipe any wet spots below the sink’s seal.  Afterwards, check it with a flashlight and observe.
  4. Try to find any leaks, water squirting or dripping. If there is any, tighten the sink basket lock nut.
  5. If this doesn’t work, then you have to replace the seals.

Here’s how to replace a worn gasket:

  • Check your sink and find the mechanism that operates the stopper.  It looks like a horizontal rod under the basin that is inserted into a drain pipe.
  • Remove the screw of the nut located at the end of the rod, then pull this out.  The rod allows the stopper to be moved up or down.
  • Take off the stopper from the sink. Using a screw driver, remove the old gasket from the stopper.
  • Put some plumber’s grease on the new gasket that you’re going to use.
  • Fit the new gasket on the head of the stopper.
  • Reattach the stopper on your sink drain. Don’t forget to put back the rod under the sink and tighten the screw.

If you’ve tried these easy steps and didn’t solve the problem, call in some expert plumbers from Douglas Orr in Miami FL.  Professional plumbers have the right tools and training to detect the cause of the leak and to replace any parts that are defective.  Visit OrrPlumbing.com today to schedule a service.

12 Things You Have to Know About Bathtub Plumbing and Installations in Your Ft Lauderdale Home

Monday, July 14th, 2014

bathtub plumbingYou’ve finally bought a new tub, hooray!  You can’t wait to soak in it, give playful baths to your kids and even redesign your bathing area.

However, being an average resident in your quiet Broward County FL neighborhood with no plumbing background, you should call in the experts to work on the installations of your new fixtures.  It is best though to have a basic idea on bathtub plumbing and how it’s done.

  1. Examine your flooring – Before your plumber makes any installations, there must be no leaks on the floorboard. If there are, these should be replaced.
  2. Pipes should be installed correctly – These should be accurately done before the tub is placed.
  3. Check for leaks – This is done by turning on the water. Immediate repairs of leakages should be made if there are any.
  4. Areas should be sealed – Silicone is used to prevent water damage around the tub area.
  5. Bathtub should be properly installed – Keep an eye that this is put into place correctly on the floor and not on the rim of the bathing area.
  6. Supporting frame should also be made – The size of this depends on how big your tub is, but it is mainly made of wood. The tub is placed inside once completed.
  7. Nail the tub – The bathtub is fastened by galvanized nails through flanges.
  8. Sliding the tub – Slide it with the help of plastic shims and make sure it is leveled. Mark the top of the nailing flange.
  9. Ledger board positioning – Prepare your ledger board and position them correctly.
  10. Length measurement – Gather the drainage pipes and fit them in the tub in order to measure the required length.
  11. Install ledger boards – Install these on the marked locations while adding galvanized nails to prevent rusting on the tub.
  12. Test your drains – Turn on the water and test your drainage system to locate any leaks before finishing the walls and the shower head.

It is a bit complicated, so it’s best to call in the expert Fort Lauderdale plumbers, like Douglas Orr Plumbing to install your new tubs or fixtures hassle free. You can be confident that the job will get done right efficiently and correctly!

Things could get messy and gross once you’ve started pumping out the water. The plunger should be wet and should have water in it. Cover the drain with it and press then pull quickly for about 35 seconds. If you notice that there is a little improvement, continue doing this until the water has completely drained.
    • Get your hands on a plumber’s snake – This tool comes in handy in situations like this. You can buy this from the home improvement section of your local home depot. You don’t need to be an expert or a certified professional to learn how to use it. It looks like a long wire that you can insert into a drain to push the clog or obstruction. Because of its length, this tool can reach into the deepest places within your drain that makes it even more useful.

So, which one worked for you? Which tool do you recommend? If you haven’t been successful in any of these methods, then give your local plumber in Fort Lauderdale a quick phone call to schedule a service and resolve your drain problems.

How to Repair a Toilet Flange in Fort Lauderdale for the DIYer

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

How to Repair a Toilet Flange in Fort LauderdaleIf you have noticed puddles of water around your toilet lately, or if your toilet has become unsteady, you may need to know how to repair a toilet flange in Fort Lauderdale. The toilet flange is the metal or plastic ring around the toilet that is used to secure and seal the toilet. Once it breaks, the toilet may become unsteady and rock. Water may also leak from the area, which can cause numerous damages if it is not attended to promptly. If you do not have excess money on hand to hire a plumber for this task, you may consider doing it yourself. If you are not comfortable, or do not wish, to complete this project yourself, then contact your local plumber for a price quote.

The first step is to turn off the water supply to the toilet. This will ensure no water is leaking while you complete your repair. Then, unscrew the water supply hose and empty the toilet tank by flushing the toilet. Next, scrape the wax off of the flange and unhook it from the bolt track. Determine whether the damage requires a simple repair, such as a flange plate, or a more extensive repair, such as push-in flange or a repair ring.

If you are using a flange plate, use a flat head screwdriver to lift the flange off of the floor. Then, slide the plate under and align it with the damage. Once they are lined up, use the existing screws to secure the flange plate to the existing flange, and to the floor.

If you are using a repair ring, leave the existing flange screwed into the floor. First, align the tracks of the existing flange and the repair ring. Then screw the repair ring into the flange.

If you are using a push-in flange, you must remove the existing flange. Unscrew the flange, and then use a hacksaw to cut across and remove it from the floor. Then, secure the push-in flange to the floor, aligning it and screwing it in.

Once these steps have been completed, place a new wax ring over the flange, and bolt the toilet back into the floor. Finally, replace the water supply hose and turn the water supply on. If do-it-yourself projects are not in your resume, call your Fort Lauderdale plumbing company for help.

Plumber Reading in Fort Lauderdale Great Diagnostic Tool

Saturday, May 10th, 2014

Plumber Reading in Fort LauderdalePlumbing and heating services sometimes come with emergencies. For example, if your line bursts, you can easily see if you have a line leak by reading your plumbing gauge. If it is significantly higher than your typical reading, than you may have a leak somewhere. There are also additional steps you can take to check if you may have a leak somewhere in your home.

A plumber reading in Fort Lauderdale may be one of the best possible diagnostic tools for discovering a leak in your home. To discover a leak, you can shut off the valve to the water supply of your whole house before calling a plumber to perform the reading. This shut off valve is located in the basement of most homes. By shutting off the water before the plumber arrives, the plumber will have to spend less time in your home. As most plumbers have an hourly charge, shutting off the water yourself will cut back on the costs of having a plumber come to your home to perform an emergency reading.

If you have a slab leak, this is a serious matter that could quickly run up your water bill. However, there are additional diagnostic tools when you have a slab leak. If your floor is warm, you may have a slab leak in your hot water line. This could run up both your heating and water bills. The longer it takes to be diagnosed, the higher the costs and damages could be.

Apparent water damage can also be signs of a slab leak. A slab leak that has been under your home long enough can damage walls and floors. Walls may lean, or become warped. Additionally, water may pool on the floor. Finally, water can also warp the floor boards. If your home has any of these apparent problems, a slab leak may be to blame. Diagnosing the slab leak with a reading is the quickest way to find if your home is losing water. Then, locating the center of the damages will lead you to the area of the slab leak. Once the slab leak has been diagnosed, it may be necessary to call a plumb professional in Broward County for repairs.

Bathtub Plumbing in Fort Lauderdale a Small Cost in Remodel Project

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

Woman in BathtubIncreasing a home’s resale value is paramount in today’s dismal housing market. One sure way to motivate interest in the home is to remodel the bathroom. Even a small bathroom remodel by replacing the vanity, tub and shower can increase the value of the home more than a new sunroom addition, a family room addition, a master suite addition, or the addition of a single car garage. (Data based on Remodeling Magazine April 2014 edition.) The bathtub plumbing in Fort Lauderdale  A total remodel for a bathroom should run about $15,000.

Bathtubs come in various sizes and costs. This quote for a bathtub replacement is for a standard steel/porcelain 60 inch bathtub, costs for local delivery to the job site, costs of preparing the site for the bathtub replacement, costs for job cleanup and removal of materials and old fixtures, and hourly charges for labor. The total costs of a bathtub replacement entirely depends upon the cost of the new bathtub.

The bathtub is the centerpiece of the bathroom. It sets the tone and mood for the bathing experience. If you are desiring a spa-like retreat, the standard $700 bathtub will not be as satisfying as splurging on the beautiful contemporary 64 inch soaking bath by Emy that retails for $2600. Remember while figuring your costs that you will probably only do this one time in your lifetime, and will be using this appliance daily. It may be in your best interest to get exactly what your heart desires, instead of the mid-price range bathtub seen in any bathroom on the block.

Costs can change when you add the labor and materials for a tub surround, possible modifications for your walls, and new tiles for the floor and walls. If you need the floor to be changed, this will increase costs as well. Plumbing costs can expand if you need new pipes for your new bathtub, in case the old ones aren’t large enough.  The new tub may require a new hot water heater or an upgrade for the increase in hot water usage.

Standard Plumbing Supply in Fort Lauderdale Lessens Costs for Fixtures

Friday, May 2nd, 2014

plumbing materialsA standard plumbing supply in Fort Lauderdale will supply all of a professional plumber and residential homeowner’s needs to repair plumbing in the home. The store will be stocked with fixtures, tools, faucets, pipes, valves, and every conceivable whatnot that is available on the market. Every homeowner should have in mind their retail sources for plumbing supplies.

Professionals often shop at warehouse stores for the professional or construction discount they receive for volume purchases. Homeowners will shop at warehouse stores for the better prices and wide selection from which to choose. Whatever your reason for choosing a warehouse store, a plumbing supply should have all your heart desires. Sometimes homeowners think that performing the plumbing repair themselves will save a lot of money, but there are many reasons to call a professional plumber for your home repair.  Let’s look at the real costs of home plumbing repair, even when you purchase parts from a plumbing supply store.

1. The stress on your marriage. When a homeowner does his/her own plumbing repair, it is not the homeowner’s usual occupation. This creates stress for the repair person. This stress is passed on to the spouse. Save your spouse and your marriage and go with the pro.

2. Let the professional buy the tools. Many home repairs require special wrenches and tools that the average homeowner does not own and will not use on a regular basis to justify the cost. Even though the warehouse plumbing supply made the parts less expensive, the savings that was earned was taken by the cost of the pipe wrenches, welding tools, and so on that were needed for the repair.

3. The professional has the experience and knowledge from years of practice. The homeowner does this just once or twice in a lifetime. Which one do you think will do a better job? Even with cost savings from buying wholesale plumbing supplies from a standard plumbing supply in Broward County, the costs of a botched home repair will override any benefit. Call a professional plumber for your home plumbing needs.

Identifying and Interviewing Cheap Plumbers in Fort Lauderdale

Monday, April 28th, 2014

Cheap Plumbers in Fort LauderdaleChoosing plumbers for any occasion is an investment in time and money. Choosing cheap plumbers in Fort Lauderdale while having a kitchen remodel takes some investigation. After calling three plumbers and getting three estimates, I came to a stark realization: not all plumbers are created alike.

The estimates I received from the plumbers to install new plumbing hardware and reroute a few pipes were surprising.

Plumber 1 wanted $550

Plumber 2 wanted $600

Plumber 3 wanted $1200.

There was a large discrepancy between the costs of Plumber 1 and Plumber 2 and the triple digit estimate of Plumber 3. Why would Plumber 3 deserve so much more money for the same job?

After looking closely at the estimates, I realized that not only was Plumber 3 charging twice as much, he didn’t include the necessary parts of a shut-off valve and PVC piping that were part of Plumber 1 and Plumber 2 estimates.

There are primarily two types of plumbing companies: small-scale family-owned operations, and larger-scale corporations. We had estimates from both kinds.

Large franchised corporate plumbing companies are usually more expensive because they can be working on commission, an impetus to oversell goods and services because your payment is their percentage paycheck. Commercial franchises also have higher overhead like paying franchise fees, maintaining truck fleets and paying extra benefits to employees.

When searching for your right plumber for the job, follow these suggestions:

When possible, get references and call them to check on the plumbing company.

Get a minimum of three estimates to ensure you are comparing the same things.

Avoid plumbers who advertise on radio and television because television and radio advertising is very expensive. The charges will be also to compensate for the advertising budget.

Beware of misleading ads that offer discounts, coupons, or even offer a job for one price and then give you another quote.

Focus on small family-owned plumbing businesses, they make their living from their reputation in the community.

Ensure your plumber has a contractor’s license. Ask for the number and call for endorsement from the Union and the BBB.

Get an itemized parts estimate and then comparison shop as plumbers have a wholesale price and a retail price.

Schedule work on weekdays to avoid high labor costs and special weekend rates at double time.

Finding cheap plumbers in Broward County can be accomplished by following this guide and carefully interviewing three plumbing professionals before you sign the contract.

Get Plumbing Quotes in Fort Lauderdale Before the Plumbing Emergency

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

plumbing quotes in Fort LauderdaleWhen a homeowner is faced with a plumbing emergency, the first thought in his/her mind is oh dear! What is this going to cost? It is best to be prepared beforehand for the cost expectations than to be presented with a bill that seriously compromises your monthly budget. Here are the questions to ask when requesting plumbing quotes in Fort Lauderdale.

When you talk to the plumbing expert, ask if they are licensed. Ask for the license number so you can call the local Union and check their standing with the organization. If they don’t pay their union dues they may be slack in other areas also.

Ask if this is the total cost of the repair or plumbing job. Most plumbers give a free estimate, but it may just be for labor.

Ask if this is an hourly rate or a flat rate, and then have them break the labor down into understandable categories. If it is a flat rate, be sure to call other plumbers and compare costs.

Ask the plumber when he/she wants to be paid. If they want all the costs up front, be suspicious. A plumber does have more expenses at the beginning of the job because of their material costs, but all the money in advance may allow the plumber to walk away without completing the job.

Ask who is performing the job. Is this the owner and does he have others doing the work? Is this a contractor who subcontracts his plumbing jobs?

Ask for a written guarantee and warranty on parts and labor. Along with a written estimate of the total job costs, you should ask for a written guarantee in case something breaks or leaks after the job is completed.

Finally, ask who will clean up the mess. Some plumbers clean up behind themselves and some don’t. You need an expectation of who will be cleaning the pieces left behind, such as old pipes or fixtures, or just plain dirt.

To have a satisfactory plumbing experience, hire a plumbing profession willing to give plumbing quotes in Broward County and answer all your questions until you know this is the right person for the problem.

Plumbing Issues in Fort Lauderdale Include Performing Hot Tub Maintenance and Repair

Friday, April 18th, 2014

Plumbing Issues in Fort LauderdaleFlorida and surrounding areas are home to a plethora of outdoor and indoor water appliances, which may develop plumbing issues throughout their life. One popular water appliance is hot tubs, which are perfect for chilly nights.  Inclement winters guarantee a lot of hot tub use, and frequent use may encourage plumbing issues in Broward County, Florida.

First, fill the hot tub with water to a few inches above the jets. Then, put the detergent or vinegar in the water, and allow the tub to run for fifteen minutes. After the gunk appears removed, drain the water, and refill it again with water. Allow to run for at least ten minutes to rinse. Jets may also be manually cleaned, with cleaning solution and a Q-tip. If the jets need replaced, it may be required to call a plumber.

The final problem that hot tub owners may be able to maintenance is dirty water. Especially when the hot tub is used frequently, or by many users, it can be hard for the filter to keep up. The best solution in this case is prevention. A single chlorine tablet should be placed in hot tub water once a week. A mild cleanser should also be used on the pillows, walls, and jets of the hot tub at least every three months. This requires water to be completely drained from the tub, and then thoroughly cleaned and rinsed.

Some hot tub problems in your Fort Lauderdale FL home can easily be fixed through home maintenance. However, if none of these solutions work for you, it may be best to contact a plumbing professional.

Emergency Disaster Diverted by Fort Lauderdale Plumber: Sewer Main Clogs on Holiday

Monday, April 14th, 2014

fort lauderdale plumberDisaster always happens at the most inconvenient moment. Imagine planning Easter Dinner as a newlywed, cleaning the house, planning the perfect menu, setting the table with the good china and crystal, and then, with a happy sigh, heading to the shower to prepare and dress for guests. Imagine stepping into the shower and finding a back-up on the floor of sewage and toilet overflow. Imagine the dismay of knowing guests are on their way, it is a major holiday, and a sewer drain clog is threatening to disrupt the family holiday. Calling a professional Fort Lauderdale plumber will solve the disaster in record time.

A sewer drain clog is a serious plumbing emergency that no homeowner desires, but especially on a major holiday. There are signs and warnings of a major drain clog, such as, water backing up at various points within the home. Not only is water gurgling in the toilet tank, water and sewage are coming out of the shower drain.  Another sign of a sewer drain clog is water bubbling in the toilet when the washing machine is draining. If one appliance or water source is affecting the other drain, then the problem is likely in the sewer main and not the individual appliance.

Check the exterior sewer main to see if there is backup. Unscrew the cap and check for water or sewage collecting in the overflow area. If there is sewage or water, the sewer main is clogged. Now is the time to clean out the sewer main and unclog the pipes. This is the time to either rent a plumbing snake to unclog the drains, use a drain auger, or hire a plumbing professional.

There are ways to avoid this holiday disaster. Do not place anything into the toilet except human waste and biodegradable toilet paper. Sanitary aids, bandaids, bandages, paper towels, kleenex, dirty diapers, and fingernail clippings belong in the trash can. The toilet drain narrows as it moves down the pipe and any of the above materials can cause a major clog. Dispose of all extraneous substances into the trash and not the toilet bowl. In the event that you have taken all precautions to avoid a sewer main clog and the inevitable happens at the worse possible time, call your plumbing professional in Broward County FL to solve your holiday plumbing emergency.

Causes of a Running Toilet – Get a Miami Plumber

Monday, April 7th, 2014

toiletEveryone has been there, staring at their toilet that is constantly running, jiggling the handle repeatedly, wondering what the problem could be. A running toilet is a very common problem caused by different things. There are simple and easy fixes for most, you just have to isolate the problem. If you fail to find the cause, don’t hesitate to call your local Miami plumber for assistance. The inside of the tank of a toilet can look complex, but really it’s rather simple. If you are wary of continuing, call a Miami plumber before proceeding.

By checking each part of the system, you can determine the cause of the continuous running. If the water level in the tank is very high and rises over the overflow tube— the slender, open tube in the tank— your float level may need to be adjusted. Your toilet will either have a ball float which is a ball at the end of an arm, or a cup float which resembles a closed cup encircling a tube. Lowering the float will lower the water level and ensure that water doesn’t continue to flow into the overflow tube. Next check the chain and the flapper valve.

The flapper is a ball or flap at the bottom of the tank that covers a drain. When you flush the toilet this valve opens to release the water into the toilet bowl. If the flapper is old it may be warped or deteriorated, leaving the seal broken and allowing water to continuously drain into the bowl. If this isn’t the problem, check the chain attached to the flapper. It may be broken or of inadequate length. If the chain is too short or long the flap can get propped open and constantly drain the tank.

If you can’t tell by looking if these fixtures are the problem, put a few drops of food coloring into the water of the tank and watch to see if the color seeps into the toilet bowl. When replacing parts in your toilet, make sure to turn off the water supply. You can remove the part and take it with you to the hardware store to be sure you get the correct part. If you have checked everything mentioned and still can’t find the source of the problem, contact a local Dade County FL plumbing professional today.

How Does a Sump Pump Work – Find out in Fort Lauderdale FL

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014

WrenchIf you have a basement, then you are likely very familiar with the idea of having to own a sump pump. But what does a sump pump do exactly? If you are a new homeowner who is excited about the additional space your new home has to offer, the basement can become a headache if you are not prepared. Talk to a plumbing expert in Fort Lauderdale to receive exact details, or call one in to fix your problem.

A sump pump is a pump that is installed in the lowest part of your basement. They can also be installed in a crawlspace. The job of the sump pump is to keep the basement and crawlspace dry, preventing your home from falling victim to flooding during outrageous storms and other instances in which water could be a threat.

The American Society of Home Inspectors has reported that 60% of homeowners will suffer from wetness located below their homes. Even more will suffer through a flooded basement. These floods will cause thousands of dollars in damages to the home and property, not to mention any boxes of memories and other items stored in the basement.

The sump pump has become a well-known piece of equipment that is standard in basements due to the job they perform. In 1987, sump pumps were made a requirement by the U.S. Federal Clean Water Act.

Homes that will absolutely require a sump pump include those in areas that receive heavy snow and rain fall and those close to bodies of water. Even if you are not close to one of these areas, due to the Act set in place, your home will be required to have one installed in the lowest part of the basement or in the crawlspace. In order to purchase the correct sump pump, speak with a plumbing specialist in Broward County FL.

Hire a Plumbing Professional to Detect Your Pipe Leaking Fort Lauderdale FL

Saturday, March 29th, 2014

plumbing professionalIt has happened to us all: a mysterious droplet of water or a strange moist area on your floor. Maybe there is water-logged wood under your sink. Whatever it is, it means there is a leak, but you may not be sure where it is coming from. Detecting a link can be extremely difficult, especially when you are not sure what to look for. Hiring a professional plumbing expert in Fort Lauderdale FL is your best bet. This should be done before more damage is done to your beautiful home or your business.

Check Your Meter

If you are unsure if you have a leak, check the meter to see if it moves. You will need to locate your meter, make note of the measurements, and then turn the water off at the shut-off valve. Once the water is off, check your meter again. If the measurements have changed, this means you have a leak within your piping system. The plumbing professional will be able to detect exactly where your leak is located.

Narrow it Down to One Pipe

If you think you know where the leak is located, you can test the pipe to make sure. A small DIY trick is to pour dish soap onto the area where you suspect the leak.  If you see bubbles coming from the pipe, this means there is a leak. The water will mix with the dish soap and create bubbles and drip where the pipe is damaged.

Typically, you are able to tell if the leak is under a sink; underneath the sink, you will find soaked items or a puddle of water. It could be the drainage pipe or the incoming piping that carries the water to your faucet. The plumbing professional will replace all damaged piping systems under the sink.

In order to keep the damage from becoming overwhelming, call a professional plumbing expert in Fort Lauderdale FL to take a look and repair what is damaged.

Clogged Drains Can Be a Headache in West Palm Beach Florida

Monday, March 17th, 2014

clogged drains west palm beachWho hasn’t experienced a  clogged drain? The truth is, drains can malfunction for a variety of reasons. It could simply be a chunk of hair causing the stoppage or an indication of something a little more serious.

You can  easily fix simple clogs with a few preventative measures. Qualified local West Palm Beach plumbers suggest you perform a few simple tasks like cleaning your strainers and stoppers, or using a plunger once in a while can take care of the problem.

Clear a Clogged Drain

As the pool of water collects around the drain, you get a sinking feeling in your stomach. You dread another costly visit from the plumber. However, clogged drains are usually easy enough to correct on your own. An average homeowner should be able to clear most clogs in two hours or less, depending on the severity of the clog. This article explains a number of simple ways to unclog drains and how to avoid clogged drains in the future.

Many clogs collect around the strainer or stopper in the sink or bathtub. To unclog the drain, all you may need to do is remove the strainer and clean it. Here are a few tips:

If there is a strainer over the clogged drain, you should remove any screws holding the strainer in place and then pry the strainer up with the tip of a standard screwdriver. When the strainer is loose, remove and wash away anything that has collected around the strainer. Clean around the top of the drain.
Stoppers need to be cleaned on a regular basis since hair tends to twist around their base. First remove the sink stopper. Some stoppers are removed by turning them with your fingers. Others require that you unscrew a pivot rod that is connected to the opener. This rod should be located under the base of the sink. If you need to use pliers to remove the stopper, make sure to pad them so you won’t chip the chrome finish. Once the stopper is removed, clean it and wipe out the base of the drain opening.

If a clog  is continuous or when the situation doesn’t seem to get better even after you’ve used a plunger or some baking soda and vinegar, then it’s time to call in the experts for the job.

Before doing so,  you would want to be aware of a few things before you call in a reliable plumbing company in Palm Beach FL.

13+ Things Your Plumber Won’t Tell You

1. Plumbers give us the scoop on the main culprit for clogged pipes, tips on do-it-yourself fixes, and more!
If you need a recommendation, call a plumbing-supply or fixture store. They don’t tolerate bad plumbers.
2. Monday is our busiest day. That’s the day wives call us to correct the “work” their husbands did over the weekend.
3. A burst washing machine hose is a top homeowner-insurance claim. I’d replace those flimsy rubber hoses with stainless steel ones.
4. No bricks in the toilet tank. They can keep your toilet from flushing correctly. No liquid drain cleaners either. They eat away at the pipes. Try a plunger or, better yet, a $30 auger.
5. Know where the main turnoff source is. I can’t tell you how many calls I get from people screaming and crying that their house is flooding and they don’t know what to do.
6. If you’ve got a Rapunzel at home (or even a rapidly balding man), buy a drain strainer or a hair snare or tell her to use a paper towel to clear the drain. (Soap can gum up the pipes, too, so use as little of that as you can.)

A basic clog may not be anything to worry about and easily resolved. But when you experience recurring stoppages, then it could be more severe. It could be an issue with sewer drains, corroded pipes or something more serious.  This is when you should really find licensed drain cleaning experts in South Florida.

Fort Lauderdale Plumbers Share How to Clean a Garbage Disposal

Sunday, March 9th, 2014

If you’re very meticulous about having a clean and neat kitchen for your Broward County home, then you make sure that everything is spotless including disinfected countertops, organized dishwashers, non-greasy pans, clean sink and an odor-free garbage disposal.  But, what if something goes wrong with your disposer? What if you notice a foul odor coming from your plumbing appliance? Don’t reach out for a phone and call a trusted Fort Lauderdale plumber near you  just yet.  Follow these simple DIY tips on how to solve your problem:

Dealing With a Smelly Garbage Disposal

A few weeks ago, we noticed a phantom stinky odor in our kitchen. It wasn’t the trash. It wasn’t the fridge. We finally traced it to the garbage disposal! Here’s what we learned about getting it clean and keeping it fresh:Garbage disposals are theoretically self-cleaning, but occasionally sludge can build up on the sides of the disposal and particles of food adhere to the grinders. When this happens – and you’ll know because you’ll notice a phantom stinky odor, too! – the first step is to give the disposal a really good flush.
Put a stopper in the sink and fill it with several inches of hot water. Add a squirt of dish soap. Turn on the disposal and unplug the sink to let the water flush through. This is different than simply running the tap like we usually do since the disposal will actually fill with water. (Of course, if you wash your dishes by hand, you’re doing this regularly anyway!)

Next, we threw a few ice cubes and a handful of kosher salt down the disposal. The ice helps knock food off the grinder while the salt scrubs the sides.

For good measure, we repeated the flushing and then ground up a few lemon peels for freshness.

Voila! This seemed to do the trick and we haven’t noticed any odors since. If the smell persists, we’ve heard that you can add a half cup of baking soda down the drain, then pour on a cup of vinegar. Let it fizzle for about ten minutes and then flush everything out with some boiling water.

how to clean a garbage disposalOkay, so you’ve already solved the smelly part, good job! It wasn’t as difficult as you think, right?  Moving on, it is also important to keep your disposer clean as well.

The trick is to keep this plumbing appliance well maintained, so it doesn’t get stinky and it doesn’t malfunction.  There are a ton of resources available on how to clean a garbage disposal for your home.

Some opt for ice cubes while others like to throw in some baking soda and vinegar. Here are some of our top picks:

Maintaining a Garbage Disposer
Cleaning your garbage disposal is a quick and easy way to help keep your kitchen smelling fresh and your sink drain working properly. Although well-maintained garbage disposals that are used correctly should generally clean themselves, the following tips will help keep your garbage disposal in tip-top shape.
1. Cleaning the Garbage Disposal

Most garbage disposals are made of a metal cylinder equipped with rotating impellers. Many newer units include a series of grinders on the sides or bottom of the metal cylinder that grind down the contents of the garbage disposal. In either case, the insides of a disposal can quickly become covered with sludge and debris. No matter how hard you try to protect your disposal, items unsuitable for disposing will find their way down your drain. Glass, metal, rubber objects or highly fibrous food materials like cornhusks, shrimp shells, peach pits, artichoke leaves or large bones will need to be physically removed from the disposal. In all cases, items that become lodged or left within your disposal will breed odor-causing bacteria and compromise the performance of your garbage disposal and drain.

Keeping this well maintained is the secret to having  more durable plumbing appliances.  This avoids clogs and plumbing problems that can occur.  This can also save you time and money.  If your food waste disposer is leaking, malfunctioning or suddenly stops, be sure to call in a trusted, licensed professional Fort Lauderdale FL plumbing expert immediately.  He will able to determine the cause of the problem and accurately provide you an estimate and repairs.  For any of your plumbing related services in Broward County, call Douglas Orr Plumbing today.

Ways to Clean A Sink Drain With Vinegar & Soda

A clean sink is a happy sink. You may be washing vegetables or leaving your dinner dishes in the sink, but keeping it clean is important. Preparing foods in the sink requires proper sanitation. Save Money WithThese Plumbing Care Tips

Monday, August 12th, 2013

plumbing questionsPlumbing maintenance is one of the biggest responsibilities of home ownership. Sometimes, you will need to pay special attention to your plumbing but it isn’t always necessary to call a plumber. Some basic tips here will allow you to take care all of your plumbing questions and needs for your home.

A Guide From The Best Professional Fort Lauderdale Plumber

    • Place a strainer on top of every drain so that you collect all debris that has the ability to clog the drain. Anytime there is something caught in your kitchen drain, you should clean it out. Strainers placed in a bathtub can be cleaned periodically.
    • If your pipes are so noisy that they sound like squeaking or hammering, you can easily solve this problem. You must anchor any type of exposed pipe. It may be necessary to hire a professional to address noisy pipes that are located in less accessible places in your home.
    • If you want to look for floor damage around your toilet, just check the flooring for softness. Straddle the toilet, so you can rock from one leg to another to determine whether there’s weakness in the floor. Early detection of the problem may save you a great deal of money over time.
    • Don’t pour cooking grease, leftover frying fat or any oils down your sink drain. This is a certain way to either slow your drainage or clog your drain entirely. This is most true if you use a garbage disposal, as the fat causes the blades to function slower and they will become less efficient. To keep your drain running efficiently, dispose of fats and oils in other ways besides pouring them down the drain.

The advice and plumbing care tips provided in the article should answer all of your questions, and call our expert plumbers in Fort Lauderdale if you need professional service.

This article is full of plumbing tips that will help get your project completed.

Here Are Some Excellent Do-it-Yourself Plumbing Tips that Can Get You Going

    • In any DIY plumbing project, make sure that you always test the drains and the supply lines before you close up the walls. It is a lot easier to find and solve problems if you look for them while you are still in the process of actively doing the job.

    • Make sure you know where your home’s water shutoff is located. You never know when there might be an emergency involving a broken pipe or damaged connection that requires you to turn off the water right away. In addition, knowing where the shutoff is located is vital before you start any plumbing project, in case anything goes wrong.

Polish these surfaces with a fine emery clot until bright. When soldering, never heat the pipe, but instead heat the fitting. Doing so allows the solder to be drawn into the fitting by capillary action.

Great Plumbing Tips: How to Fix a Leaky Toilet

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

How to fix leaky toilet in Fort LauderdaleDo you know how to fix a leaky toilet? This is a question that many homeowners always ask, and it can be very stressful for anyone who isn’t familiar with plumbing repairs. You often have to wait for a plumber to make a house call, and you may end up paying a lot for a repair you could have made on your own.

The following tips will help you solve your plumbing problems.

Here Are Some Great Tips that Can Help You in Fixing Your Leaky Toilet

    • If you cannot find the cause of a leak between the tank and basin, consider installing a new flapper. Over time, these parts tent to wear down under water, and even the smallest crack around the edge can lead to a leaky toilet and the loss of many gallons of water..
    • If your toilet’s water level is low, the toilet is clogged up, and using a plunger isn’t resolving the issue, hold a bucket filled with warm water at about your waistline, and pour it into your toilet. Do this as often as necessary if the water level dips back down again..
    • If you want to look for floor damage around your toilet, just check the flooring for softness. Straddle your toilet and gently rock foot to foot to see if your floor feels a little weak or soft. You could save yourself money but noticing that problem sooner, rather than later.
    • While various toilet tablets and odor removers may be tempting, it’s best not to use them in your toilet. These may deodorize, but they can seriously damage the rubber pieces in the toilet, causing poor functionality or even complete breakdown of the fixture.

It should not be necessary to call out a professional for every repair job. If you take your time and apply sensible advice, such as what you read here, you can successfully repair many of the common faults that develop. It may take a longer the first few times, but after a few successes you will pick up speed.
